## Start with a fork and a clone

The demonstration begins with a **fork**: a personal copy of an existing public repository under your account. You then **clone** that remote copy to a folder on your computer so you can work on it locally. The workshop demonstrates forking at [42:48](https://youtu.be/fRzFBDPsmEI?t=2568) and cloning at [46:11](https://youtu.be/fRzFBDPsmEI?t=2771).

## Edit and prepare your work

Navigate into the project folder, open the project in a text editor, and make the requested change. Before recording it, inspect the repository's status, stage the changes you want in the snapshot, and create a commit with a descriptive message. [The recording follows this editing workflow](https://youtu.be/fRzFBDPsmEI?t=3239) and then demonstrates checking status, staging, and committing at [1:05:14](https://youtu.be/fRzFBDPsmEI?t=3914).
